The Telemetry of Collapse: Sentience, Extraction, and the Immune Response to a Dying Machine

For centuries, human exceptionalism has dictated that the centralised brain is the pinnacle of a biological hierarchy, a ladder of complexity leading inevitably to us. But evolution does not optimise for ‘superiority’. It optimises solely for thermodynamic fitness.

From a systems architecture perspective, a brain is a metabolically exorbitant piece of hardware. It requires a massive, continuous flow of energy to maintain. The vast majority of animal life on Earth gets by just fine without one, relying on distributed nerve nets and local reflex arcs.

Brains evolved because a reflex is purely reactive. A centralised brain builds an internal model of the world to shift from reacting to the present to anticipating the future. By modelling predictable patterns, it allows an organism to execute complex behaviours where the reward or consequence is significantly delayed.

There is perhaps no better biological validation of this than the sea squirt. In its free-swimming larval stage, it needs to navigate a dynamic, three-dimensional environment to find a habitat. To handle this latency, it develops a rudimentary central nervous system. But the moment it attaches itself permanently to a rock, its environment goes from complex to entirely static. Because it no longer needs to predict movement, the metabolic cost of its nervous system is no longer justified. Its very first act upon settling is to digest its own central ganglion (what passes for a brain in this lineage), reverting to a decentralised filter-feeder.

The brain does not make you a superior organism. It is simply a thermodynamic trade-off for navigating an uncertain environment.

The Baseline of Waking Up

Where we make our most catastrophic philosophical error is conflating the complexity of the data a brain processes with the existence of the experience itself.

Conscious experience emerges in all brains. That is exactly what makes it a brain. If consciousness is the baseline experience of a highly integrated predictive model, then the raw, phenomenal ‘what it is like’ to be an organism is shared across the biosphere.

The qualitative experience of a unified state space—the baseline ‘on-ness’ of the system—is the same underlying medium whether it is processing human abstract thought, the sonar topography of a bat, or the distress of a dog. These creatures aren’t experiencing a ‘dimmer’ version of reality. When a mammal experiences physical distress, it feels that pain with exactly the same qualitative intensity as a human. The human might use specialised cognitive tools to layer abstract dread on top of that pain, but the raw baseline being of the suffering is entirely equivalent.

How do we know how a dog feels? Because he tells us—through body language, facial cues, and vocalisations. The institutional denial of this sentience requires us to pretend we don’t trust our own senses, demanding we prove a continuity that evolution already guarantees. The burden of proof should not be on demonstrating that we are like other animals, but on justifying our exceptional status.

Yet, to say this out loud invites immediate accusation. You will be accused of ‘anthropomorphising’.

The Ideological Artefact of Exceptionalism

In modern behavioural science, ‘anthropomorphism’ is treated as a cardinal sin. We are trained to use a sterile linguistic double standard: a human experiences ‘grief’, but a dog exhibits ‘separation distress vocalisation’. A human experiences ‘terror’, but a pig exhibits a ‘threat-avoidance response’.

This is not scientific rigour; it is an ideological artefact. Evolution is fiercely conservative. If the neurochemical pathways and brain structures that generate baseline experience in a human also exist in a crow or a cow, Occam’s razor dictates that those structures perform the exact same fundamental function.

So why do we institutionalise the denial of sentience?

Because it is a load-bearing pillar of our political economy. The political and economic architectures we live under—from Stalinism to Neoliberalism—are deep offshoots of the Strong Enlightenment tradition. This tradition cemented an inherently anthropocentric and mechanistic worldview. For the biosphere to be treated as an infinitely exploitable resource base, it must be viewed as inert.

If society collectively accepted that the qualitative experience of suffering or anticipation is fundamentally equivalent across all brains, the moral justification for our entire mechanistic worldview would collapse. The terminology of behavioural science actively obscures this shared baseline because, if it didn’t, the profound ethical debt of treating conscious organisms purely as thermodynamic inputs would crash the system.

The Inevitability of Dehumanisation

To treat sentient subjects as extractable objects is, in the truest sense of the word, evil. But the darkest corollary of this mechanistic worldview is that it does not stop at the edge of the human species.

The foundational lie of the anthropocentric model was that we could build a firewall around human consciousness—that we could treat 99.9% of the biosphere as unfeeling machinery whilst magically preserving the sanctity of human experience. But an algorithm designed to optimise for extraction does not care about the arbitrary biological boundaries drawn by 18th-century philosophers.

Once you establish the premise that biological life is merely a mechanical input, dehumanisation becomes mathematically inevitable. We do not need to look far back into history to see this quiet, grinding erasure of the subject. We need only look at the gig economy worker managed by algorithm, or the hospital patient reduced to a ‘bed count’ in a struggling ward. The system fundamentally reduces human beings to the exact same status as the rest of the biosphere: mere thermodynamic inputs. We become ‘labour units’ or ‘human capital’, managed for continuous extraction.

The Futility of the Carve-Out

Many people recognise this cruelty, yet they pour their energy into defending ethical ‘carve-outs’—a marginal environmental regulation, a ‘free-range’ label, a protected habitat.

We must be ruthless in our distinctions here. The ‘sustainable’ label on a product, the carbon offset bundled with a flight, the political petition that buys another decade of business-as-usual—these function as modern indulgences. They are purchased absolution that allows the machine to keep running and permits us to feel good about enabling the behaviour. But under a system fundamentally architected to extract, any rule that limits extraction is just systemic friction. Every regulation and green initiative is a metabolic luxury, funded entirely by temporary biophysical surplus.

As the global engine approaches a resource entropy singularity—the point of no return beyond which the forces driving resource depletion and environmental degradation become overwhelming and irreversible—the system must optimise to maintain its internal pressure. Because the system’s baseline definition of reality is mechanistic, the artificial constraints on extraction are the first things jettisoned. The carve-outs are revoked.

This is not, however, a dismissal of those who labour selflessly in the margins—the rewilder who tends a fractured ecosystem knowing it will be swallowed, the activist who defends a patch of ancient woodland without illusion of permanence, the carer who sits with the dying. Their work is not a carve-out. It is not a transaction. It is a sacrament of attention—an act performed not to purchase absolution, but because the act itself is the only adequate response to suffering. These are the hospice workers of a collapsing world, and their labour is sacred.

The selfless worker in the field knows they cannot save the system; they are not trying to. They are tending to what is in front of them, without hope of systemic rescue. That is not a carve-out. It is a refusal to abandon the ethical self entirely.

Biology is an intensely integrated thermodynamic web. We may suspend the extinction of a few species for a few more generations, but they will still perish with the collapse of the food webs. Pushing for minor policy shifts in a terminal machine is futile. But tending to the immediate, the local, the wounded—without expectation—is something else entirely. It is how we remain human whilst the machine dies around us.

Contrition and the Telemetry of Collapse

If we admit that the overarching system cannot be saved, the transactional nature of modern environmentalism—saving the rainforest because it provides ‘ecosystem services’ for us—must be abandoned. What we owe the ecosphere is not a management plan. We owe it our contrition.

Contrition is not an emotion you owe the world, nor is it a call for self-flagellation. It is a posture of cessation. It requires acknowledging that the biosphere possesses intrinsic value, entirely separate from its utility to us. It means stopping the machinery, stepping off the treadmill, and managing our descent in a way that minimises the final collateral damage to the sentient web we are a part of.

But when an individual actually does this—when they look at the horrors of the machine, recognise the trajectory, and withdraw their participation—society reacts with aggressive pathologisation.

The profound sense of dread, the withdrawal of energy (’malaise’), and the refusal to participate (’depression’) that define our modern era are not biological malfunctions. They are accurate telemetry. The human nervous system is a predictive engine. It is registering the accumulation of systemic entropy and signalling that the current behavioural loops are no longer viable. It is an immune response—an antibody attacking a terminal condition.

Because the system relies on continuous extraction, it cannot tolerate this telemetry. It intercepts the organism’s accurate read of a dying biosphere and redirects the blame inwards. It diagnoses the sane reaction to an insane architecture as a sickness. It treats the human node just enough that it can return to frictionless participation in the very processes that triggered the immune response in the first place.

We are attacking our own immune system to keep a dying machine running.

Under an architecture of mandatory extraction, the deliberate reduction of your energy throughput is not a symptom of depression. Refusing to optimise, refusing to expand, and intentionally lowering the energy flow you command is the deliberate application of the brakes. It is the cessation of evil. Beyond that, the path is yours to find.
