The 2014 book “Harperism: How Stephen Harper and his think tank colleagues have transformed Canada” by Donald Gutstein, is like déjà vu all over again, it is an absolutely essential read to see into Canada’s near future with the latest Harper-clone set to slide into office with little resistance.
Reviews of the “Harperism” book from James Lorimer Co., Publishers:
"Engaging...Gutstein’s most important observation for the future is that other countries that have endured comparable regimes the U.K. under Thatcher; the U.S. under Regan [sic] and Bush, Sr. did not see neoliberal policies reversed by the centrist administration that followed." - Dan Rowe, Quill & Quire
"What causes dramatic changes in political culture? Historic events, powerful leaders or breakthroughs in science and technology form the basis on many. But in the age of globalization, the internet and information overload, there are also more subtle and incremental ways to effect change. Harperism connects the dots by drawing a line between the free market philosophy espoused by Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman and the global phenomenon of conservative think tanks. Gutstein argues that the dotted line leads all the way to the change in political culture that encouraged nearly 40 percent of Canadians to vote for the most conservative prime minister in Canadian history." - Beth Haddon, Literary Review of Canada
Regarding the first review, note that many of Harper’s neoliberal policies were not reversed by the incoming narcissistic clown Justin Trudeau in Canada; likewise many of the policies of Trump 1.0 were continued by his successor Biden. And with the ongoing wrecking-ball of Trump 2.0 and Musk’s DOGE, turning USA into a wasteland similar to Gaza as regards governance, total reconstruction, rather than “reversal,” would be required.
And now we have Pierre Poilievre, Harper’s attack-dog, about to be swept into power in the next government of Canada. People ask “who is the best Canadian leader to debate Trump.” They fail to see the sub-surface linkage between Pierre Poilievre and Trump. Not through a friendship but rather through their common linkage via the neo-liberal think tanks. These think tanks (stink tanks) probably have a “Project 2025 Canada” plan written and ready to roll, in the coming Pierre Poilievre regime. As with the requirement of “all hands on deck” to counter Trump’s annexation of Canada, it requires the same effort to save the country from attack from within by the insidious schemes of these think tanks, and their anointed candidate. That is the lesson from the second review quoted above. Canadians are now looking for “made in Canada” products and produce. Yet they are lining up to accept as Prime Minister a disciple of the same playbook that the Trump 2.0 regime is using.
But is there an alternative? Canada has already shot herself in the foot by allowing a strictly parochial-nationalist party to sit in the Canadian Parliament, du Bloc Québécois, “Le seul parti qui défend les intérêts du Québec.” As for the so-called “leaders” of the other parties in parliament, just one, Elizabeth May of the Green Party, has any talent and leadership qualities necessary to be Prime Minister. The NDP (“New” Democratic Party) supposed leader Jasmeet Singh, couldn’t lead the children in a stage play of the “Pied Piper.” As for the Liberal so-called “Party,” a vacated political shell with no core values, the leader of the past decade, Justin Trudeau, politically assassinated any close rivals to power in the party, leaving all political power concentrated in his hands, in the PMO (Prime Minister’s Office), a continuation of presidential-style CEO governing well ensconced by the Harper regime, to the fatal detriment of parliamentary democracy. Thus, at present, there is no major-party alternative to the quiet sweeping-in, of a Harper 2.0 regime, under leadership of Pierre Poilievre. The Liberals are attempting to wave in the small-C conservative and man-from-Goldman-Sachs candidate Mark Carney, who attends campaign events in civilian attire to avoid being seen as an elitist central banker. As per the MSM (main-stream media) usual approach, no investigation of his think tank ties has been investigated.
Therefore every person in Canada and every political party in Canada, who truly does not enjoy the Trump 2.0 regime, must seriously get a grip and very quickly figure out how to put together an operational political resistance scenario to both confront the threat of Trumpian expansionism AND the insider takeover by neoliberalism as represented by Pierre Poilievre. That, folks is Job #1.
And remember, the only real remedy for the whole world to counter Trumpism is to stop accepting US dollars!
